Gallery owner and curator Georg Peithner-Lichtenfels and artist Tanja Prušnik found the artistic approach to designing the exhibition with the title “Go West” in this specific location within the space itself: is it a gallery in an office, or an office with a gallery? How does one establish a connection between the “levels”, and will the different users and visitors of the space use the opportunity provided to them through the offering of artistic works? Should the space itself be seen as a destination or rather a pathway through the “diversion of art” to a new experience, a new feeling in the room that meets other needs besides just the functional? The selected works from the series are chosen for the room and the experience within it; the experience of discovering other “places” and taking oneself on a journey through the artistic context to another level. Art moves and changes spaces.
An art project with very significant location-specific references to the Carinthia region of Austria is the very foundation of the “Go West” exhibition: the “Rosenserviette Edition 14/edicija 14” created from it for the Feistritz im Rosental municipality.
The project involving a napkin originally made reference to the current perspective of a different place located far in the West towards the East, a fact that now marks the start of a vice versa project that goes back to its roots.
Artist Tanja Prušnik works in cycles and enhances her approach to painting through its transformation and integration in sculptural, architectural constructions. At the start of a work she goes beyond the “limits” of the piece even during painting, by not restricting the “paint tracks” to the conventional flat image space and materials, but rather by incorporating even the sides of the canvas frame and giving the piece a physical “body”. The two-dimensional picture is transformed into a three-dimensional object, with painted surfaces that multiply and demand that onlookers constantly change their perspective or viewpoint.
